Thirty years ago my mom begged from deep within her morphine haze to go for a drive to see the holiday lights. She looked forward to that drive every year, and my dad loved being her ever-present chauffeur. But never had she been in so much pain or so fragile. I could see he was ripped in two, wanting to protect her from more pain, but also wanting to grant her this one final wish.
As I walked through a holiday light display in my home town the other night, all I could think about was how excited she would have been to see what I saw. I sent the vision to her wherever she is now, and in return I felt the same giddy feelings I witnessed in her all those years ago.
When we stay connected to loved ones who have passed, we never have to give up the magic or the love we felt when they were alive. We do have to mourn their absence from our everyday lives, but we don’t have to let them go.
Somehow, their energy finds its way into our hearts, and somehow we can sense it when they receive ours.
This is what I discovered during my journey through grief 30 years ago. It's what led me to create Invisible Ink, a book of the letters to and from my mom after her death that revealed to me how connected we continued to be.
It's also the process I turned into a letter-writing program that has helped thousands of people stay connected, even as they mourn the loss of their loved one.
This is all to say to you that there is hope and I can show you how to feel that, too.
In the meantime, I hope you can find your own special way to share the spirit of the holidays with everyone you have ever loved. No matter where they are.
COMING SOON
Invisible Ink, the online letter-writing program that mirrors the book. You'll be led through a process that includes:
• relaxation techniques to alleviate the stress of grief
• writing prompts that help you process your grief and grow more and more connected to your loved one.
You'll also be able to interact with others who have signed up for the course, as well as with me, in a private chat room.
